The entrance to the 27 km pass and World Heritage site lies close to vintage town of Prince Albert. Untarred road winds to the summit 1 583 m above sea level in steep zig-zags and sudden switchbacks, with gasping views around every corner. The dry stone packed retaining walls is a fine piece of engineering. In one place on the southern side the wall is 2,4kms long. They range in height from ½ m to 13 m. The pass has a large variety of flora to fauna. The fynbos is at its best in winter and spring with Proteas, Ericas, Restios and Pin-cushions in abundance.
